Wild Bird Wednesday

Great Crested Grebe

We went to lunch in a restaurant on Lake Zurich in Wadenswil ... on our way Isabel was talking about a bird carrying her young on her back that she had seen earlier in the summer on the lake, but she didn't know what it was.  Once we got to the lake there were ducks and swans and, of course, Coots but that was all.  We went up on the deck of the boat where the restaurant was and were ordering lunch when I saw the Great Crested Grebe.  We never get them on our lake so I was very excited and Isabel said that was the bird she had seen with the baby on it's back.  He dove a few times and then disappeared ... but, oh what a beautiful bird.

The water in Lake Zurich is so clear, you can see to the bottom in most places.  And, I have to say the water in Switzerland tastes wonderful.  If our water was that good, I would drink it all of the time.  So that is it for today ... Have a wonderful week, everyone :)

HI Andrea I think this is a Great Crested Grebe, not a Horned Grebe but still a beautiful bird especially in breeding plumage and it has also a wonderful display during that time.

Thank you, Margaret. I jumped to that conclusion because there were no Great Crested Grebes in my bird book ... but of course, it is a Birds of North America Book. I have made the corrections and appreciate that you caught it for me. Now I have learned something new today :) Thanks ...

I really like the picture with the head underwater. We are lucky to have quite a lot of Great Crest Grebes at Marbury Park near where we live. From Findlay

How very, very beautiful. Not least to see water as it should be (and so often isn't).

Beautiful grebes. I saw a pie billed grebe carrying a baby on its back once ...an amazing birding experience. The water must be wonderful... I'd love to taste it.

It's always interesting to see the bird life in other places, whether it be on the other coast of the land we live in or in another country.

Grebes are so pretty to me and I was only introduced to them a couple of years ago. Thank you for your kindness~

I love Great Crested Grebes! Surprisingly, they are found across much of the world, so I even see them here in Australia. I'll never forgot the amazing dance they do when courting each other, but I would love to see one carrying its babies on its back!

The water is so clear - I love the shot where you can see the head and neck under the water!
