Wild Bird Wednesday

I was doing my usual spying on the birds from the window and I noticed a small Blue Jay ... Yes, whip out the camera and take a picture ...

Then, suddenly a male Bluebird arrives at her side and feeds her a peanut ...

I knew about this courting behavior, but I have never witnessed it. 

She turns away from him and he leaves ...

while she waits patiently ...

 He returns with another morsel to feed her ...

They flew off together and in my mind I imagine them building a nest somewhere in the area.  He will continue to feed her through the breeding, incubation and while she tends the brood.  Then, sometime this summer, I will see them feeding their not so little fledglings at my feeder (I see it every year ... fledgling Blue Jays can be very demanding, but cute and they always look bigger than their parents ... now why is that? :).  Wishing you a Happy WBW!

The Blue Jays (Cyanocitta Cristata) are a rather large and raucous bird that storms my feeders daily announcing their arrival and expecting everyone to clear the way.   They are not my favorites because they belong to the group of bully birds that make it hard for the smaller, more timid birds to get their fair share ... but then again, they do mob the hawks when they are around and that helps keep things in balance and they are, without question beautiful.  So I welcome them as I do all of nature's creatures ... God made them with a purpose.

This week I am continuing with my Winter Birds at my feeders.   It is so cold out here this week (-19 wind chill), I worry about them making it.  Extra food and keeping the bird bath full ... then fingers crossed :)

The Blue Jays are exquisite against the stark white background ... I love them even if they are bully birds :)
