Wild Bird Wednesday

Purple Finch
We have a lot of House Finch around, but once in awhile I will spot a Purple Finch among them.  They look so much alike and even their songs are similar ... but when you get a good look, there is nothing more beautiful than this little bird.

So, why "purple"?   Why not red?

Such a beautiful little bird, but I'm asking the same question??? Was the person who named it colorblind???
Terrific captures! Hope your week is going well!!

They're so pretty!!! I have not seen them this far south...but would love it if I did!!
I think the only finch I've seen in my area is a Lesser Finch the first spring we lived in Texas [if it's yellow and black then it IS the lesser]

Anyway, again Andrea, thanks so much for your endearing comment. And I would give up both my ovaries [If I had 'em] to witness the whooping cranes learning to fly with an airplane as a teacher...oh to be a pilot!!!

He is beautiful. And considerably 'redder' than the British Robin Red-breast.

Pretty bird and yes one wonders why it's not called a "red" finch. Sort of like a purple onion being called a "red" onion. Weird.
