Wild Bird Wednesday

Wild Bird Wednesday #39
Link to "Paying Ready Attention"

I am stepping back today ... going to the Ranch where we started our trip.  While we were watching the Prairie Chickens and their marvelous dance, a little stranger flew into the mix.   It was hard to tell what it was at first because it is small (compared to the Prairie Chickens) and it wasn't until it turned it's head and I saw the yellow that I knew it was a Meadowlark.  In this case a Western Meadowlark.  I know that it is a Western only because our guide pointed out that the song is different from the Eastern and that is what she was hearing out there this morning.  They actually have both the Eastern and Western in their area and the only way to tell them apart is by listening to their song ... Boy, I learned so much on this trip.  What a joy!

a beautiful bird to see; not one I'm used to at all, so it is lovely to share via Wild Bird Wednesday

Hi there - glad you like my pictures.

I think this may be the first meadowlark picture that does not have the bird sitting on a post!!

Cheers and thanks for linking to WBW - Stewart M - Melbourne

I love to hear them sing!!! I'm jealous, we don't have them this far south. At least not in my area.

Lucky you, I've never had the pleasure of seeing a lark on the ground. Only heard them high up in the sky.

I see the Eastern Meadowlark every summer, over in Bunny Meadow. This is the only place near us that I have seen them. I love them.

These are beautiful. I've never seen a meadowlark. This had to be such fun for you. Now I'm off to check out the kids on today's post. You have a great day, hugs, Edna B.

Oh so beautiful! I entered Eastern Meadowlark images two weeks ago and they looked a wee bit lighter than these, but both species are really gorgeous birds~

There are meadowlarks in Eastern Washington - we really enjoyed their continuous song as we drove along - one starting before the last one fading from our hearing. Lovely birds - wish we had them on the west side of WA.

I've never heard the Western Meadowlark's song, but could listen to our Eastern birds all day long!
Sounds like you had a wonderful trip!
