Manly Monday

                                 Sir Sidney Poitier

Born in 1927 Sidney Poitier became the first black person to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field.  In 1967  he starred in three well-received films making him the top box office star of that year. In 1974 He was made Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Poitier among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time, ranking 22nd on the list of 25.  Sidney has served as the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan since 1997 and in 2009 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States highest civilian honor, by President Barack Obama.

His sterling acting and directing career made him a role model to all young men, teaching them work ethic and commitment.  He is a husband and father of six young women some of whom are making their own name in the theater.  He worked hard, he lived well, he helped many which makes him a good Manly Man.

We've obviously viewed many of the same movies from years back. I remember how much I enjoyed Sidney Portier in "Lilies of the Field", and he just continued to get better - and more handsome - as he aged! Great choice for Manly Monday! :-)
